The 50th Anniversary of Cambodia’s victory over Thailand in the Preah Vihear Temple’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) (June 15, 1962-June 15, 2012) was held here this morning at the National Institute of Education.

Some 1,000 students from different schools and universities, government officials, academicians, as well as Secretary of State at the Office of the Council of Ministers H.E. Keo Remy attended the celebration.

Dr. Ros Chantrabot, Adviser to the Royal Government of Cambodia, said that on June 15, 1962 the ICJ ruled that the Preah Vihear Temple was situated in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia, and Thailand was under an obligation to withdraw any military or police forces, or other guards or keepers, stationed by her at the temple, or in its vicinity on Cambodian territory.

Thailand was also ordered to return to Cambodia any antiquities it had removed from the temple, he added.

The dispute over Preah Vihear flared up again in July 2008 after the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee approved Cambodia’s request to list the temple as a World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008.

This dispute had led to deadly gun exchanges until Pheu Thai Party, led by Prime Minister Her Excellency Yingluck Shinawatra, won a landslide victory in July last year.
