PHNOM PENH, 2 June 2014: Cambodia Association of Travel Agents says good connections and airline service from other ASEAN member countries will be the main driver to push tourism forward.
The association president, Ang Kim Eang, said the increase in ASEAN travellers to Cambodia was driven by an expansion of direct airline services from ASEAN national capitals.
“Visa-free entry for the holders of ordinary passports between Cambodia and ASEAN partner countries have also encouraged more ASEAN citizens to visit Cambodia,” he said.
Cambodia is famous for two cultural sites that are on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. One is the 12th century Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap province and the other is the 11th century Preah Vihear temple in Preah Vihear province that is not fully open to tourists, but should be soon.
It also blessed with more than 450 km of beaches in four southwest provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep and Koh Kong.
ASEAN tourists to Cambodia accounted for 33.5% of 1,267,922 million visits during January to March this year, according to Ministry of Tourism data.
During the first quarter of this year, Vietnamese visitors topped the chart with 189,816 visits (+4.2%), followed by Laos with 99,023 (+6.9%) and Thailand with 52,193 (-9.7%).
Malaysia and the Philippines were fourth and fifth with 32,770 (+13.9%) tourists and 27,878 (+6.8%) respectively.
In addition, there were 13,195 Singaporeans (+10.8%), 7,954 Indonesians (+27.0%), 1,178 Myanmar (+16.7%) nationals, and 229 Brunei citizens (+20.5%).
Cambodia grants visa exemption to citizens of all ASEAN nations and is cooperating with Thailand to offer a two-country visa issued at the embassy of the first point of entry for nationalities that are required to obtain visas for both countries.
