E-visas great news for India’s tourism industry and for expat job prospects, says Interdean

Leading overseas relocation specialist, Interdean, has backed the proposed introduction of electronic visas in India to have a profoundly positive effect on the country’s hospitality and tourism industry and open up the job market to foreign nationals.

The response follows the recent three-day Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India’s (FHRAI) annual convention, during which industry leaders predicted that the e-visa has the potential to double India’s inbound tourism if implemented properly.

India attracted 6.8 million tourists in 2013, which included Indians staying abroad. This figure represents just 0.6% of the total global tourist movement, a meagre share for a country of its size and tourist attractions. But those working in the sector are upbeat that this will represent a watershed moment in its history.

Subhash Goyal, president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) maintains that e-visas present a huge opportunity for the country to realise its true tourism potential as it will reduce the time it takes for tourists to get visas to just three days.

As a leading international shipping and removal services provider, Interdean has come out in support of the plan for e-visas in India, insisting that it will help to elevate India’s status as a top tourist destination and create jobs for Indian citizens as well as those looking to relocate from abroad.

A spokesman for the company said: "India’s proposal to introduce e-visas is long overdue and will provide just the boost that the tourism industry in the country needs. For a country of its size and considering the immense attractions it has to offer, it has underachieved in terms of visitor numbers for too long. Shortening the visa process so that it is on a par with that seen in neighbouring tourist hotspots will help it achieve the status it deserves."

"A prospering tourism industry in India is also great news for those seeking work within the sector, both at home and abroad. A huge influx in foreign tourists will create a huge number of jobs and will represent a wonderful opportunity, not only for its own people, but for expatriates. India’s economic growth is already seeing its popularity as an international relocation destination increase, and the likelihood of excellent career prospects within a flourishing sector is only going to strengthen its appeal further," he added.
