Cambodia: Marginal growth in March

PHNOM PENH  Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 4.2% in March, this year, according to the country’s statistics and tourist Information Department.
Most of the arrivals were generated by neighbouring markets and China.
The country attracted 417,052 visits compared to 400,076 during the same month last year.
Released by the Ministry of Tourism, earlier this week, data showed Vietnam led the field with 79,506 visits increasing 6% from 74,975 during the same month in 2014.
CAMBODIA KHMER NEW YEAR Other markets in top five were: China (62,996; +25.8%); South Korea (37,222; +2.1%); Laos (29,338; -14.6%); and Thailand (27,142; +38.1%).
March data showed that 55% (229,357) of all international visitors arrived by air. Siem Reap Airport received the major share, 32.4% (134,933). Meanwhile, Phnom Penh Airport had a market share of 22.6% (94,424).
Overland travel accounts for 41.3% (172,126) through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while sea travel is a small 3.7% (15,569).
In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Siem Reap province, home to Angkor Wat, posted a share of 46.1% attracting 224,799 visits, while Phnom Penh and other destinations accounted for 39.4% (192,253 visits). Coastal areas had a small share of 13.2% with 64,195 visits, while ecotourism areas accounted for just 1.3% or 6,439 visits.
By region, Asia Pacific led with a market share of 74.4% and an increase of 5.7% on 310,278 visits.
Africa recorded an increase of 84.6% but on a very small volume of 744 visits followed by Middle East (+11.3%; 1,287), Americas (+10.0%; 31,147), Europe (-4.2%; 73,596), and Oceania (-7.5%; 10,472).
The decline in travel from Europe worries officials who rely on that market for high-revenue visits mainly to cultural sites. However, the decline is a trend that is troubling all Southeast Asian destinations due to poor economic conditions in Europe.
For January to March this year, the country welcomed 1,307,836 internatoinal travellers improving 3.1% from 1,267,922 visits in 2014.
Outbound trips reached 246,912 growing 18.2% during the first quarter this year compared to 208,972 trips during the same period last year.
