Cambodia arrivals grow 2.7%

PHNOM PENH, 27 April 2016: Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 2.7%, January to February, this year, according to the statistics and tourist Information Department.

Released by the Ministry of Tourism, Tuesday, the country registered 914,554 tourist arrivals compared to 890,784 during the same period last year.

During the first two months, outbound trips by Cambodians reached 224,411 growing 40.7% from 159,465 trips last year.

inside no 2In February alone, the country recorded 448,468 inbound trips improving 4.2% from 430,207 during the same month last year.

China led with 81,032 visits increasing 14.2% from 70,965 during the same month last year.

Other top five markets were: Vietnam (72,239; +4.1%); South Korea (43,764; -11.8%); Thailand (27,216; +22.7%); and the United States (24,044; +9.4%).

The data reported 59.7% (267,771) of all visits were on airlines. Siem Reap Airport received the major market share, 37.0% (165,871). Phnom Penh Airport secured a market share of 22.5% (100,709) and Sihanoukville Airport just 0.3% (1,191).

Overland travel accounted for 35.2% (157,939) arrivals through border checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while sea travel was a small 5.1% (22,758).

In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals in Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, accounted for 46.6% of the total at 246,212 visits, while Phnom Penh and other destinations enjoyed a market share of 38.3% attracting 202,256 visits. Coastal areas had a market share of 13.8% with 72,893 visits, while ecotourism areas accounted for a 1.4% receiving 7,358 visits.

By region, Asia Pacific accounted for a 70.3% market share and posted an increase of 1.8% supporting 315,228 visits from 309,712.

The Middle East recorded an increase of 23.2% with 2,127 visits following by Americas (+10.6%; 37,515), Europe (+10.3%; 92,770), Africa (+9.4; 828) and Oceania (+5.6%; 12,088).

Outbound trips by Cambodians in February this year reached 115,962 increasing 49.9% from 77,358 during the same month last year.

Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, said Cambodia hopes to have 1 million skilled tourism service providers to handle targeted 8 millions visits to the country by 2020.

Skilled labour will need to rise dramatically by 2020 to accommodate the growth forecast for the industry. To maintain sustainable growth in the sector, the services and hospitality sectors must achieve higher standards.

The industry already employs about 620,000 people but the industry will need more than 1 million employees by 2020.

Last year, the kingdom attracted 4.77 international travellers increasing 6.1% from 4.50 million visits in 2014.inside-no-21
