Apsara thins trees

SIEM REAP  Apsara Authority says it will cut trees down that pose a safety risk to visitors to Angkor temples, but the thinning will not be too harsh on the forested landscape.

The Angkor Park covers 401-sq km of forested land.

A report in Khmer Times said the authority would cut only the trees that were considered a safety risk to visitors.  During the annual monsoon season, late May to September,  older trees are often felled by thunder storms accompanied by strong winds.

Apsara Authority said it will adopt a cautious approach and will follow the advice of working groups such as the forest risk monitoring group and the forest inventory group.

“The risk monitoring group is a team that checks all the large trees near temples and along the roads. This group is responsible for trimming branches, or removing an entire tree if it is considered to a risk to the temples or people,” an Apsara spokesperson  told the media.

The other group collects statistics on the condition of hazardous trees and their impact on the park’s temples.

During January to March this year, the park welcomed 701,358 international tourists improving 1.8% over the same period last year. Revenue generated USD20.3 million from ticket sales in first quarter increasing 2.5%.

The largest sources markets, based on Angkor ticket sales, were China, South Korea and Japan.

The entrance fee to the Angkor Historical Park costs USD20 a day (foreigners only), USD40 for a three-day visit and USD60 for a week-long visit.

The park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992 and is now the country’s largest cultural tourist destination. It is located in Siem Reap province, some 315 km northwest of capital Phnom Penh.
