Cambodia tourism gains 2.5%

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s tourist arrivals increased by 2.5%, January to April, according to the country’s statistics and tourist Information Department.

Data released by the Ministry of Tourism, Tuesday, shows the country welcomed 1,710,161 international travellers compared to 1,668,975 visits during the same period last year.

Outbound trips by Cambodians reached 461,921 growing 30.7% for the first four months of the year from 353,356 trips last year.

inside no 4In April alone, the country recorded 367,684 trips improving 1.8% from 361,139 during the same month last year.

Vietnam led the supply markets with 88,138 visits decreasing 2.0% from 89,907 visits during the same month last year.

Other markets in the top five were: China (57,623; +5.2%); Thailand (31,461; +29.0%); South Korea (22,386; -19.3%); and Laos (19,263; -14.7%).

The data showed 49.9% (183,563) of all international visitors arrived by airlines. Siem Reap Airport received the major market share, 26.9% (99,012), while Phnom Penh Airport secured a market share of 22.9% (84,094) and Sihanoukville Airport shared 0.1% (457).

Overland travel accounted for 47.2% (173,712) through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while sea travel was a small 2.8% (10,409).

In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Phnom Penh and other destinations accounted for 50.9% welcoming 220,742 visits, while Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, enjoyed a market share of 33.9% attracting 146,942 visits. Coastal areas had a market share of 13.9% with 60,125 visits. Ecotourism areas accounted for a 1.4% on 6,143 visits.

By region, Asia Pacific accounted for a 78.8% market share and posted an increase of 1.8% supporting 289,610 visits from 284,555.

Africa recorded an increase of 25.1% with 871 visits followed by the Middle East (+6.2%; 1,007), Oceania (+4.5%; 13,066), America (+3.6%; 24,868) and Europe (+0.8%; 51,328).

Outbound trips by Cambodians in April reached 133,574 up 25.5% from 106,444 during the same month last year.

Secretary of State for Tourism, Pak Sokhom, said the tourism sector contributes 16% of the country’s gross domestic product per year.

According to Ministry of Tourism, a tourism strategy for 2016 to 2020 focuses on Chinese travellers. A publication “China Ready” indicates that multiple visas for the Chinese will approved soon and that the country will target 2 million Chinese visits this year.

The overall target for tourist arrivals is 8 million by 2020.
