Cambodia and Turkey discuss flights

PHNOM PENH Cambodia and Turkey will discuss opening an airline route, on  to develop tourism and trade at joint meeting, Tuesday.

Phnom Penh Post reported Cambodian Commerce Minister, Pan Sorasak , saying he had held talks, last week, with Turkey’s ambassador to Cambodia to follow through on a plan announced in 2015 to establish direct flights as part of a push to build bilateral trade to USD500 million a year by 2020, from the current USD108 million.

The minister and ambassador are scheduled to meet again, 21 June, to discuss the issue further, the report said.

inside no 5Turkish ambassador Pan Ilhan Tug was quoted saying  “Turkey still hoped its national carrier would establish direct flights, but problems had cropped up concerning the proposed route.”

Turkish Airlines inaugurated a weekly cargo flight between Istanbul and Phnom Penh in May, but has yet to announce a decision on a passenger service. An Airbus 330 is used for the cargo run.

The airline has suffered financial setbacks as tourism to Turkey slumped after a spate of bomb attacks in tourist districts in Istanbul.

According to Ministry of Tourism’s Statistics and Tourism Information Department data, the country attracted only 5,820 Turkish travellers, last year, but it represented an increase of 20.8% from 4,801 visits in 2014.
