Cambodia to train more travel staff

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism has outlined a plan to build more tourism vocational training centres due to be operational by 2019.

Agence Kampuchea Press quoted Tourism Minister Thong Khon saying the lack of tourism vocational training centres was a challenge that urgently needed to be addressed.

“To resolve the issue the Royal Government of Cambodia will allow the Ministry of Tourism to build two more vocational training centres in Phnom Penh and in Sihanouk province funded by the French Development Agency with a capacity to train 1,300 people per year from 2019.”

inside no 4In related news, Cambodia has also received assistance through Shift 360, a Swiss Foundation, to create the Academy of Culinary Arts, which is able to train around 300 chefs a year starting 2017.

The Ministry of Tourism has also issued the “One Staff, One Skill” campaign and the “Good Hospitality” initiative to promote tourism skills.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, just 500 Cambodians completed an ASEAN course on standards and service in tourism and hospitality, in order to be registered with the ASAEN secretariat.

The number would have to rise dramatically by 2020 to accommodate the growth forecast for the industry. Cambodia’s tourism industry employs 620,000 people.

Last year, Cambodia attracted 4.77 million international visits compared to 4.50 million in 2014.
