Cambodia’s half year tourism results

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s tourist arrivals increased 2.6% during January to June this year, according to the statistics and tourist Information Department.

Released by the Ministry of Tourism, late last week, the country logged 2,360,932 international tourist arrivals compared to 2,301,990 during the same period last year.

Outbound trips by Cambodians reached 699,654 growing 26.5% for the first six months of the year from 553,014 trips last year.

In June alone, inbound tourism reached 330,170 trips improving 3.7% from 318,267 during the same month last year.

Vietnam led the supply markets with 79,150 visits, but it represented a decline of 8.6% from 86,556 visits during the same month last year.

Other markets in the top five were: China (53,531; +17.8%); Laos (24,263; -15.2%); Thailand (23,274; +6.0%); and South Korea (21,556; +24.7%).

The data reported 51.8% (170,886) of all international visitors arrived by airlines. Phnom Penh Airport led with a 26.7% major share, (88,257), while Siem Reap Airport’s share was 24.9% (82,168) and Sihanoukville Airport just 0.1% (461).

Overland travel accounted for 46.7% (154,260) through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam while sea travel was a small 1.5% (5,024).

In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Phnom Penh and other destinations accounted for 54.1% (210,131 visits), while Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, enjoyed a market share of 30.9% attracting 120,039 visits. Coastal areas had a market share of 13.6% with 52,935 visits, while ecotourism areas accounted for a small 1.5% receiving 5,661 visits.

By region, Asia Pacific accounted for a 82.1% market share and posted a slight increase of 2.2% with 270,950 visits up from 265,121.

Americas recorded an increase of 17.4% with 24,251 visits followed by Africa (+16.8%; 786), Europe (+7.5%; 33,522), the Middle East (+5.8%; 661), and Oceania (+4.1%; 11,346).

Outbound trips by Cambodians in June, this year, reached 110,473 up 20.8% from 91,433 during the same month last year.
