Cambodia woos Henan’s airlines

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism wants more direct flight between the country and China’s central province of Henan to boost tourism.

Agence Kampuchea Presse reported Tourism Minister Thong Khon saying he had asked the Chinese province of Henan to encourage more direct flights to Cambodia.

The minister made the request during the visit of Henan’s vice governor Zhang Guangzhi.

Aeroplane landing at sunset, CanadaAccording to the Council for the Development of Cambodia, China invested some USD856 million in Cambodia, last year, making the country the biggest investor in the Kingdom.

Khmer Times quoted the ministry’s deputy director, Chhay Khunlong, saying Henan vice governor said he would recommend that airline companies in Henan consider flying to Cambodia. Henan has a population of 90 million people.

“Through this visit we can take advantage of Henan’s tourism experience and we can promote Cambodian tourism to Henan as well,” he added.

For the first nine months of this year, 577,283 Chinese tourists visited Cambodia up 12.5% from 513,021 visits during the same period last year, according to Statistics and Tourist Information Department figure.

The country tourism authorities believe China will overtake Vietnam in the next few years to become the first largest source of tourists to Cambodia.

In June, Cambodia established the China Ready Centre to cater to roughly 2 million Chinese tourists per year, expected to visit the country  by 2020, as well as to improve the skills of local tourist operators working with Chinese clients.

The centre will facilitate research on the requirements and demands of Chinese tourists as well as strengthen the Chinese language and cultural skills of Cambodian tourist operators.

Henan is a province in China located in the central part of the country. It is home to 3,000 years of recorded civilisation, including a number of famous temples such as the UNESCO-listed Shaolin Monastery, which was influential in developing martial arts.
