SIEM REAP A meeting to discuss Angkor Archaeological Park preservation will be held next week to identify measures to protect and develop in a sustainable manner the country’s world heritage site.

Khmer Times reported the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC-Angkor), co-chaired by Japan and France, will meet 24 January to discuss ongoing preservation efforts at the Angkor Archaeological Park as well as the up-coming ticket price hike, due to take effect next month.

The two-day meeting will consist of a plenary session to discuss policy and development projects, as well as a technical session, which will see dozens of experts gathered to identify and provide solutions to issues plaguing the UNESCO world heritage site.

inside no 1The meeting will follow up and review recommendations that were adopted in 2016, the report said.

It will also discuss the adoption of new recommendations based on reports and discussions on steps required to protect the park. Issues include ticketing and the need for more cooperation between international teams and Cambodian authorities in the urgent task of restoration.

After this month’s meeting, another technical session will be held in June to serve as yet another follow-up to monitor if recommendations adopted at the January’s meeting were pursued, it added.

International visits to the World Heritage park increased 4.63% to 2.19 million last year. The top source markets were China, South Korea and the United States.

Revenue from ticket sales reached a record USD62.5 million in 2016, representing a solid increase of 4.21% over 2015.

The entrance fee to the Angkor Historical Park costs USD20 a day (foreigners only), USD40 for a three-day visit and USD60 for a week-long visit.

New entrance fees are due to take effect 1 February this year. The new fees are: one-day pass USD37, three-day pass USD62, and seven-day pass USD72.

The park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 and is now the country’s largest cultural tourist destination. It is located in Siem Reap province, some 315 km northwest of capital Phnom Penh.
