Cambodian Premier Receives ASEAN Defence Ministers

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen received here this morning at the Peace Palace a delegation of the ASEAN defence ministers led by H.E. Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Minister of Defense of Indonesia, prior to the official opening of the 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (6th ADMM). 

On the occasion, Samdech Techo Hun Sen warmly welcomed the presence of the ASEAN defense ministers to attend the 6th ADMM hosted by Cambodia on May 28-30, H.E. Ieng Sophalet, Assistant to the Cambodian prime minister told reporters. 

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the 6th ADMM, which reflects the solidarity in the ASEAN family, will bring about resolutions and new initiatives in a bid to build a strong ASEAN Community, the assistant added. 

The Cambodian premier further recommended the ASEAN defence ministers to consider the roles of the armies, not only in national defence, but also in humanitarian activities, including the intervention during natural disasters in the region as well as in the world. 

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also initiated an ASEAN Civil War Free Zone and encouraged the ASEAN member countries to consider sending their troops to join the peacekeeping operations under the UN umbrella. 

The participation in the UN peacekeeping missions and the ASEAN Civil War Free Zone are the major factor to strengthen regional security and expand the roles of ASEAN on the international arena, he explained.  

There will be soon a signing on the core meaning of the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty by super power countries in Cambodia, said Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
