Tourists flock to Angkor Wat

SIEM REAP: Siem Reap’s provincial tourism department reports visitors to the World Heritage site, Angkor Wat, January to June, reached 1.12 million, a 6% increase over the same period last year.
The Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism reported the data, Tuesday, adding that South Korea, China, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand were the largest tourist sources to the historical park.
For the first six months of the year, South Korea led the field increasing 4% to 202,700 followed by China with a growth of 76% to 137,820, but Vietnam declined 38% to 78,600 visits.
In addition, Japanese visitors increased 6% to 68,780, while Thailand was down 12% to 54,200 trips.
The entrance fees to Angkor Wat are US$20 for international visitors per day, US$40 for a three-day visit, and US$60 for a week visit.
The Angkor archeological park is Cambodia’s most popular cultural attraction on the outskirts of Siem Reap town, located 315 km from the capital Phnom Penh.
Last year, the site attracted 2.06 million foreign visitors, earning around US$30 million from ticket sales.
The temple was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
Low cost airline Thai AirAsia announced, Monday, it will launch daily flights to Siem Reap effective 1 October this year.
The daily flight, FD 2850, will depart Don Mueang Airport at 1030 and arrive in Siem Reap at 1130, while the return flight, FD2851, will depart Siem Reap at 1215 and land at Don Mueang at 1315.
