PAL plans Cambodia flights

PHNOM PENH, 24 September 2013: Philippine Airlines plans to launch flights between points in the Philippines and Cambodia.

However, detail on the start-up dates are not available. The move would break the monopoly enjoyed by  competitor, Cebu Pacific Air, which started flying between the two countries last April.

According to local media reports, Cambodia’s Air Transport Department director, Vann Chanthy, said aviation authorities in the Philippines sent a letter to Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation requesting permission to fly to the Kingdom.

The procedure  is standard as ASEAN air routes are wide open for airlines registered in the region. They can serve most major cities, but have to file details with the appropriate authorities. They are more likely to face restraints from airport companies due to the shortage of flight slots during peak operating hours than from government departments.

Aviation industry website ch-aviation reported last week that Philippine Airlines plans to resume flights to Europe in November after it was banned by the EU in 2010.

Philippine Airlines holds a 49% stake in Cambodia Airlines, the carrier jockeying to break into a domestic market monopolised by Cambodia Angkor Air.

Ministry of Tourism statistics show that 97,000 Philippine tourists visited Cambodia last year, a 37% increase compared to 2011.
