Ultimatum for Air Mekong

22 May 2014  2036 | Business & Trade Fairs

Private airline, Air Mekong, must resume flights by the end of this year to maintain its operations certificate, after suspending services a year ago.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Transportation confirmed, last week, the business certificate for Air Mekong has been extended to late December this year, by which time it must resume operations.
Deputy Minister Pham Quy Tieu was quoted by local media as saying that its certificate will be revoked if it does not start flying again by the new deadline.
According to Vietnam’s aviation regulations, an airline’s license will be withdrawn if it suspends commercial flights for more than a year.
In late April, the CAAV submitted Air Mekong’s proposal for a six-month extension on its license to the transport ministry.
The airline received its license in December 2008 and is a subsidiary of Quang Ninh-headquartered Ha Long Investment and Development Company, better known as BIM Group. It is the second airline in Vietnam to suspend services after Indochina Airlines, which went bankrupt a year after opening.
Air Mekong started commercial flights in 2010, with 13 domestic routes flown by four Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft up until 1 March 2013, when it announced it was suspending flights to restructure its fleet.
The airline has still to make a decision on the lease of Airbus 320s or Boeing 737-800s to replace its grounded Bombardier aircraft.
