Myanmar to add more ATRs

State-owned Myanma Airways will sign an agreement with the French manufacturer of ATR aircraft to buy six new planes and open a maintenance base in Myanmar.
The airline’s managing director, Than Htun, told local media that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, 6 May and the full agreement has been filed with the Attorney General’s Office for review and approval.
The ATR72 is a popular plane in Southeast Asia and there are already enough aircraft in Myanmar to justify a maintenance base. It would save the cost of sending planes to Malaysia or Singapore.
Myanma Airways intends to buy six ATR 72-600 aircraft.
The state airline has been operating since 1948 and currently flies to 26 cities with a fleet of nine aircraft – three ATR72s, one ATR42, three Beech 1900D and two Embraer 190. They also have two cargo planes; a MA 60 and a F28.
It recently signed an agreement with GE Capital Aviation Services to lease 10 new Boeing aircraft during the Singapore Air Show.
According to the contract GE Capital Aviation Services will lease to the airline six Boeing 737-800 and four Boeing 737- 8 Max from June 2015 to 2020.
