The Central Aviation Authority of Vietnam has instructed relevant agencies to step up measures to cull bird populations near airports in Vietnam.
The project follows reports of 11 bird strikes so far this year. The incidents threatened aviation safety at airports in Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Pleiku in the central highlands, Vinh in northern Vietnam, and Rach Gia in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.
CAAV director, Lai Xuan Thanh, said it was imperative to reduce the risk of bird strikes.
The authority will study and invest in traps and equipment to scare birds away, based on the location of the airports.
The agency will also make efforts to limit the water and food sources near the airports to encourage birds to settle elsewhere.
CAAV instructed Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Jetstar Pacific and the Vietnam Air Services Company to report more efficiently on bird strikes and bird activities detected near the airports and asked that all preliminary results to be submitted by 31 August.
Last year, ACV sent a team to Changi International Airport in Singapore to study bird mitigation measures at the airport.
ACV has set up systems to monitor and prevent birds nesting near airports nationwide. The measures include cutting trees, draining ponds and using sound to scare birds away.
