Route loses its golden shine

HANOI  A controversial plan to over fly Lao PDR and Cambodia to give airlines the shortest flight time between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City might not be as ‘golden’ as its supporters thought.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hong Truong said the Ministry of Transport will announce a decision later this month on whether to move ahead on the proposed golden route.
But the savings in fuel are nothing like what had been earlier suggested. Flight simulators of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam and VietJetAir showed that the proposed new route was just 86 km shorter than the current one, saving only five minutes of flying time and 190 kg of fuel.
inside no 6The proposed route would require airlines to fly over Laos and Cambodia rather than following the longer route that hugs the coastline of Vietnam between the capital in the North and the commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City in the South.
As the new route would fly over Laos and Cambodia, Vietnam’s airlines would have to pay over-flight fees as well as charges for navigation aids. It would require a series of negotiations on the route to reach an agreement with neighbouring countries. It is quite unusual for domestic flights to use foreign air space.
Officials said that once all parties agreed on a specific fee, it would be possible to calculate detailed efficiency with the results to be announced next month.
In March 2009, the CAAV received a proposal for the Hanoi-HCM City straight air route from a former pilot Mai Trong Tuan.
Media hyped the subject calling it the golden route without any justification, other than they assumed it was considerably shorter than what the facts indicated when simulated flights were conducted by airlines and the civil aviation.
