ANA and PAL codeshare

MANILA Japan’s All Nippon Airways and Philippine Airlines recently agreed to establish a commercial partnership covering areas such as codeshare and frequent flyer programmes.
The agreement will benefit customers of both airlines by providing them with greater choice and flexibility a Centre For Asia Pacific Aviation report states.
The codeshare between two countries is due to commence 26 October and reciprocal frequent flyers programmes between ANA and Philippine Airlines will begin at the same time.
PHILIPPINES-AVIATION-COMPANY-PAL-SANMIGUELANA added its new service from this March between Haneda International Airport and Manila International Airport while Philippine Airlines also added its new daytime service between Manila and Haneda.
Total flights between Japan and Philippines operated by ANA and Philippine airlines will be 74 a week.
Under the codeshare, ANA will add its “NH” designator code to Philippine Airlines-operated flights not only between Japan and Philippine but also domestic flights within the Philippines.
Philippine Airlines will also add its “PR” designator code to flights between Japan and the Philippines and domestic flights within Japan operated by ANA.
Passengers between Japan and the Philippines will also be able to take advantage of through check-in reducing minimum connection times at Manila airport from 120 minutes to 90 minutes when connecting to onward domestic flights.
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation said the new codeshare should significantly improve PAL’s position in Japan, the airlne’s largest international market.
Japan is a strategically important market for PAL and currently accounts for about 22% of the carrier’s total international seat capacity. It is PAL’s largest single market based on seats.
But competition between the Philippines and Japan has intensified significantly over the past year, driven primarily by expansion at PAL rival Cebu Pacific Air. Forging a partnership with ANA is a sensible strategic response by PAL as it will help PAL maintain and leverage its leading position in the Philippines-Japan market, the centre said.
PAL currently operates eight daily flights to Japan, including four to Tokyo Narita and one each to Tokyo Haneda, Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagoya. All the flights operate from PAL’s main hub at Manila except two flights from Cebu to Narita. PAL uses a mix of A320s, A321s and A330s on flights to Japan with larger aircraft often being deployed during peak periods.
PAL is planning to increase Manila-Haneda to 11 weekly flights in late this month, giving it 60 weekly frequencies to Japan when the codeshare with ANA is launched.
ANA currently has 14 weekly flights to the Philippines, including seven 787-8 frequencies from Narita to Manila and seven 787-8 frequencies from Haneda to Manila.
