BANGKOK Don Mueang International Airport says the low-cost carrier V Air from Taiwan will encourage more airlines to consider flying to Bangkok’s second airport.
Don Mueang International Airport general manager, Wing Commander, Songsak Tongtang said V Air commenced services using an A321 with 194 seats last Wednesday.
“The airline operates daily flights and hopes to start a new service between Taipei and Chiang Mai early next year…the service will boost tourist-related traffic between the two countries.”
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation noted that the drop in passenger traffic between Taiwan and Thailand was more marked than other routes after the Thai military coup last May.
inside no 3Figures from Ministry of Tourism and Sports show Taiwanese arrivals to Thailand dropped 25.62% to 349,385 visits from 469,736 January to November this year.
Once V Air flies to both Bangkok and Chiang Mai it will compete head-on with Tigerair Taiwan, a joint venture between Taiwan’s China Airlines and Singapore’s Tiger Airways, which made Bangkok its second destination and Chiang Mai its third in November. It serves Don Mueang daily and Chiang Mai four times weekly.
V Air is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transasia Airways.
The airline plans to serve Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Chiang Mai, Denpasar, Singapore, Kalibo, Cebu, Seoul Incheon, Jeju, Busan, Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Tokyo.
Don Mueang Airport is still well below its 18.5 million per year capacity, with just 13 scheduled airlines, offering 560 flights a day and 70,000 passengers a day.
