A passenger aircraft has crashed into Taipei‘s Keelung River, killing at least 12 people.

The TransAsia Airways flight hit a road bridge before plunging into the river on Wednesday morning. Footage from the scene showed rescue workers evacuating passengers from the badly damaged and partially submerged ATR turboprop aircraft.

The China News Agency (CNA) reported a Taipei government spokesperson as confirming that the flight had just taken off from the city’s Songshan Airport, en route to Kinmen Island, when the incident occurred.

It was carrying 53 passengers and five crew members, many of whom are believed to be trapped inside the wreckage. Twelve people are now confirmed to have died.

In July last year 48 people died when a TransAsia Airways ATR aircraft crashed on Penghu Island.
