NAY PYI TAW  A new domestic carrier, Apex Airlines, will start flying next month from Myanmar’s political capital.
The airline’s COO, Selva Kumar, told the Myanmar Times that Apex’s first aircraft, an ATR 72-600, should arrive in Nay Pyi Taw next week, with a launch planned for late March.
“A second aircraft will arrive between June and July and a third will arrive between September and October.”
Apex will be based in Nay Pyi Taw, initially serving domestic destinations such as Yangon, Dawei and Myeik, and later Myitkyina, Mandalay, Bagan, Sittwe, Thandwe, Kawthoung, Heho, Kengtung and Tachileik.
inside no 3The airline has a long-term plan to establish regional services using an Airbus 320.
“We are not just looking into flying to Southeast Asian nations but also South Asian destinations such as India and Bangladesh,” he told the media.
Myanmar’s start-up airlines often outline plans for fast expansion, but fleet size suggest they will quickly over extend without enough back-up aircraft to support the network, while failing to deliver reliability for passengers.
Apex was incorporated in November 2012 and is chaired by Tanintharyi Region businessperson, U Khin Soe, who also heads fisheries firm Anawar Hlwam, Apex Gas & Oil Public Company, Apex G&O Group Hotel and Dawei Development Public Company.
Currently, there are nine domestic airlines: Air Mandalay; Yangon Airways; Air KBZ; Mann Yadanarpon Airlines; Air Bagan; Asian Wings Airlines; FMI Air Charter; Golden Myanmar Airlines; and Myanmar National Airways.
