Air China will take over the operation of the Beijing-Johannesburg route, which is currently served by South African Airways (SAA), China’s People’s Daily has reported.

The state-run newspaper revealed that SAA will suspend its Beijing service on 28 March 2015, and there will be a two-and-a-half-month hiatus before Air China resumes the flight on 18 June.

Air China and SAA are partners in the Star Alliance.

Following the resumption of services, Air China will fly to Johannesburg three times a week using a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. Services will depart Beijing’s Capital International Airport every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, with the return flights leaving Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Beijing-Johannesburg service was first launched by SAA in February 2012.
