The Atlanta-based airline has added the Alipay payment platform to its website, allowing Chinese passengers to make online bookings via delta.com and pay via Alipay.

This move makes Delta the first US-based carrier to offer Alipay payments.

“This exciting new partnership is one of many Delta initiatives to build the most Chinese-friendly US airline,” said Vinay Dube, Delta’s senior vice president for Asia Pacific.

“As the US and China have agreed to issue multiple-entry visas for up to 10 years for short-term business and tourist travel, our partnership with Alipay will give more Chinese consumers the chance to experience travelling in the US with our industry-leading product and service in flight and on the ground.”

Delta currently operates direct flights from Beijing and Shanghai to two US gateways, Detroit and Seattle, and is also planning to connect Shanghai and Los Angeles from July 2015.

As well as the Alipay service, Delta offers Chinese language options on its website, at airport kiosks and in-flight entertainment, and employs Chinese-speaking cabin crew on its Chinese flights.
