Air India starts flying to West Bengal’s new airport

Air India has become the first airline to launch commercial operations at the new Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in West Bengal.

The inaugural flight, operated by Air India’s regional subsidiary Alliance Air, flew from Kolkata to the new airport on 18 May 2015, touching down at 1740. Alliance Air will now operate the route every day except Fridays, using its 48-seat ATR 42 aircraft.

Serving the city of Durgapur, the 263-hectare Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport is India’s first private greenfield airport.

Air India said the new flights will serve the “long-standing need of the residents in the Asansol-Durgapur belt”, which is home to numerous industries.

“The flight will save passengers from Durgapur the time-consuming road journey to Kolkata and provide them air connectivity to Air India’s Delhi and Mumbai flights the same evening, and accelerate growth in the region,” Air India added.
