Air India launches new engineering base in Hyderabad

Air India has opened a new state-of-the-art new engineering facility at Hyderabad‘s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility was inaugurated by India’s Minister for Civil Aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati, and will exclusively serve the Air India fleet.

“We are pursuing the ‘Made in India’ initiative of the Prime Minister of India and this MRO unit is a very strong platform in that direction,” said Rohit Nandan, chairman & managing director of Air India.

“Air India has always been in the front whenever there has been a need by the country like the recent evacuations from Yemen and relief operations to Nepal and development of the MRO facility is also a very important field in supporting the development of engineering infrastructure in the nation.

“At one point of time it was difficult to construct the facility that has come up at Hyderabad as Air India also had financial difficulties but with the support and motivation from the Govt of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, today we are standing in the state-of-the-art facility and looking ahead to playing much bigger roles,” he added.

The Hyderabad facility will provide a full range of aircraft maintenance services, technical support, spares, aircraft engine services and technical training for all major aircraft types, including the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The centre cost INR792 million (US$12.4m) to develop and be able to accommodate two narrow-body aircraft or one wide-body aircraft at a time in a 9,000m² hangar.
