Thai agents draw more clients

BANGKOK  Association of Thai Travel Agents’ member companies handled 3,704,775 international tourists at Suvarnabhumi Airport, during January to November, last year, representing an increase of 42.93% over 2,591,951 visits during the same period in 2014.

ATTA released its data, late last week, based on fees member agencies pay to the airport to provide a meet-and-greet service for international clients.

The association president, Charoen Wangananont, told TTR Weekly that tourism showed a positive growth in 2015 and that should continue this year.

inside no 3“Tourists using association member companies should grow 12% to 13% this year. Asia will continue to be the major source.”

“Business from China will grow steady…however, Chinese tourists may return to Japan and South Korea, which will reduce market share for Thailand….European markets will also pick up this year,” he said.

For the first 11 months of last year, China led the field with an improvement of 129.16% from 835,537 visits to 1,914,741 visits.

Although showing a decline of 64.11%, Russia ranked second with 175,648 visits compared to 489,424 visits during the same period in 2014.

The next top five markets were: Vietnam (173,600; +201.26%); India (168,511; +19.46%); and South Korea (136,425; +51.66%).

In November, there were 343,661 foreign tourists who travelled with association members decreasing 6.82% from 368,820 visits during the same month in 2014. Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine explosion on 17 August 2015 was blamed on the decline in bookings in the capital city during October and November.

China was the top source in the 11th month of last year with 173,236 visits growing 16.52% from 148,673 visits.

Russia followed in second with 26,828 visits, but down 51.91% from 55,789 visits during the same month in 2014.

South Korea ranked third with 16,678 visits increasing 74.62% from 9,551 visits.

India  in fourth place, with 14,778 visits, was down 1.79% from 15,048 visits, while Japan in fifth place, with 11,376 visits, dropped 18.17% from 13,902 visits.

The next top five markets in November were: the United Kingdom (8,340; -80.48%); Germany (6,734; +45.44%); Vietnam (6,037; -20.90%); France (5,402; -17.73%); and the United States (+56.10%).

The association also reported 106,557 tourists travelled with member companies arriving at Don Mueang Airport in November, last year. Visits were up 45.90% from 67,778 during the same month in 2014.

China also topped arrivals at the second gateway recording 92,775 visits, up 60.13% from 57,939 visits.

Indonesia was second with 4,264 visits growing 0.97% from 4,223 visits during the same month in 2014.

India ranked third recording 2,181 visits, an increase of 106.34% from 1,057 visits.

Malaysia in fourth place, with 1,989 visits, grew 20.18% from 1,655, while fifth placed South Korea with 1,254 visits increased 405.65% from 248 visits.

The next top five markets in November were: Vietnam (1,217; +170.44%); Japan (644; +43.43%); Myanmar (435; +15.38%); Poland (213; +10.36%); and Singapore (+202; +102.00%).

ATTA members handled 4,767,135 clients at both airports during January and November last year increasing 30.45% from 3,654,311 visits during the same period in 2014.
