Thai AirAsia adds Vientiane

BANGKOK Thai AirAsia will launch a daily flight from Bangkok to Vientiane in Laos effective 1 July.

Up until recently low-cost airlines were not allowed to fly to Luang Prabang or Vientiane. Thai AirAsia was the first LCC to gain traffic rights to Luang Prabang and it is now likely that other low-cost airlines will follow.

Breaking the price monopoly of legacy carriers in Lao PDR will be a boon for Laos residents and foreign tourists who were discouraged by expensive air fares.

Thai AirAsia’s commercial director, Santisuk Klongchaiya, said the airline received  positive feedback from passenger with the Luang Prabang flight achieving an average load factor of 80% to 85%.

“The response prompted the airline to add the second route, Bangkok-Vientiane, which connects to the two capital cities of Thailand and Lao PDR.”

He added: “Vientiane is the main commercial destination in Laos…we are sure it will be a boon to business travellers. At the same time, we hope to attract more Laotian travellers to Thailand by offering them a direct and affordable flight to Thailand.”

Vientiane is already considered an important source of business for Thai SMEs.

At the same time, Vientiane is also a destination for cultural tourism and serves as a gateway for overland travel to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.

Thai AirAsia offers flights to seven ASEAN countries with 15 destinations.

In CLMV region, it flies from Bangkok (DML) to Yangon (four flights daily) and Mandalay (daily) in Myanmar; Hanoi (daily) and Ho Chi Minh (three daily) in Vietnam;  Phnom Penh (two daily) and Siem Reap (three daily) in Cambodia and Luang Prabang (daily) in Lao PDR.
