Battle for Danang traffic begins

DANANG  Vietnam Airlines will launch flights from Danang to Bangkok, 26 June, with four flights weekly using an Airbus A321 aircraft.

The new flight will pitch Vietnam Airlines in a battle for traffic with Bangkok Airways that started its own Bangkok-Danang flights 25 May.

Vietnam’s media reported the one hour and 35 minute flight will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

inside no 1Flight will depart Danang at 2255 and arrive in Bangkok at 0030. The return flight will depart Bangkok at 0145 and arrive in Danang at 0320.

The Bangkok service will be one of four international routes Vietnam Airlines offers from Danang International Airport, the largest airport in central Vietnam. The other routes are Siem Reap, Seoul, and Tokyo.

Thailand’s Bangkok Airways has started four weekly flights between Bangkok and Danang 25 May.

The two airlines will compete head-on for business, but Bangkok Airways can rely on is code-share partners to supply traffic and it will have the edge due to its strong track record dealing with European tour operators.

Vietnam Airlines, meanwhile, has a strong domestic network that can tap traffic for the Bangkok route, a popular destination with Vietnamese tourists mainly for its shopping malls and entertainment.

Last year, Danang welcomed 4.7 million tourists, both domestic and international, representing a 22.4% year-on-year increase. The city’s tourism revenue reached USD566.96 million.

The city has 492 hotels, resorts or guesthouses with 18,233 rooms and 218 travel companies.

The main attraction is to travel south along the coast to Hoi An a World Heritage destination.
