KIEN GIANG TUI Nordic, a  tour operator and charter airline based in Stockholm, Sweden, plans to launch nonstop flights to Phu Quoc island, in December.

Local media reported the airline’s maiden flight to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island located close to Cambodia will depart Sweden, 18 December, using a Boeing Dreamliner.

TUI Nordic will pre-sell seats as part of a tour packages for the weekly flight through to 2 April 2017.

inside no 1TUI Nordic’s senior product manager, Tommy Serban, was quoted saying nearly 5,000 Swedish customers will visit the island during the next six months.

“Our ambition is to grow the destination in coming years,” he said.

The recent opening of Richis Beach Resort, a Novotel resort and other hotels that meet TUI Nordic requirements, such as La Veranda, Sea Star, Vinpearl and Saigon Phu Quoc, enabled the company to introduce the island as its first charter holiday destination in Vietnam.

Phu Quoc lies around 45 km offshore from Vietnam’s southern province of Kien Giang.

Foreign travellers can visit Phu Quoc for a 30-day visa-free stay. However, they must enter through the island’s seaport, or through its airport, after transiting through Hanoi, or Ho Chi Minh City’s international airports. TUI’s flights are direct, nonstop services from Sweden, the first out of Europe.

By 2020, the island is expected to gross USD771 million from providing hospitality to 2 to 3 million tourists annually. Around 40% will be foreign visitors. Last year, the island welcomed more than 873,600 visitors, which included 151,700 foreigners.

Currently, Phu Quoc has more than 6,000 hotel rooms. The island expects to have 15,000 rooms by 2020.
