BANGKOK Thai AirAsia launched a daily Bangkok -Tiruchirappalli service, 29 September, making it the sixth direct international air service to the Indian city.

Commonly referred to as “Trichy” by its residents the city’s commerce chamber and business associations are supporting efforts to open more flights between Thailand and India.

They hope to establish stronger trade and tourism links between the two cities.

The DMK-TRZ-DMK route is the first from Don Mueang Airport and Thai AirAsia is the fifth international carrier to fly to ‘Trichy’.  Flight time is two hours.

Other airlines serving the city are: Srilankan Airlines; AirAsia; Scoot Air; Malindo Air. Air routes connect Tiruchirappalli (TRZ) to Colombo, Sharjah, Singapore, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. The flight from Bangkok becomes the Indian city’s 6th direct International service.

Tiruchirappalli is now the 13th city in India with direct flights to Bangkok.

On Thai AirAsia’s inaugural flight, using a 160-seat A320, the passenger uplift on the outbound sector to TRZ was 58 and on the return sector to DMK 181, mainly tourists.

Leading Indian association leaders in Bangkok had earlier met with Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Kobkarn Wattanawarangkul, to discuss trade and tourism connectivity between the two cities.
