Air Asia has appointed Aireen Omar to head the airline, as Group chief executive Tony Fernandes redirects his attention to the carrier’s broader expansion.

Announced this week, the appointment comes alongside the airline’s new regional strategy that includes further joint ventures across the Asean region and beyond.

The airline said Ms Omar will step into the chief executive role of Air Asia Berhad from 1 July this year, reporting directly to Mr Fernandes.

The carrier’s head said Ms Omar’s appointment was a plus for the carrier due to her extensive expertise and because it makes the airline “the first Asean Group with two female CEO’s”.

“I am delighted with the appointment of Aireen, who has consistently demonstrated her capabilities and commitment in propelling AirAsia to new heights,” Mr Fernandes said.

“She has long been an invaluable part of the senior management team of AirAsia and possesses the vision and leadership qualities crucial for the company’s growth in its second decade.”

Ms Omar joined the airline in 2006 where she held the director of corporate financial title before moving into her current regional head of corporate finance, treasury and investor relations position.
