PORT STEPHENS - The Nelson Resort in Port Stephens has been voted the best deluxe hotel on the NSW North Coast, with its gourmet cafe also featuring in the 2014 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide for the first time.

The boutique, new-look Nelson Resort was voted the best deluxe hotel between the NSW Central Coast and the QLD border at the recent North Coast Tourism Awards while the resort’s popular and stylish cafe, The Little Nel, which serves Suspension Espresso premium coffee from Newcastle, was recommended as one of the best cafes in the Hunter region in its first appearance in the latest 2014 edition of the ‘foodie’s bible’, the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide.

Owner Andrew Macdonald and his family bought the former, 3.5-star motel-style Nelson Lodge in 2010, and after a major facelift, transformed the property into a stylish, 4-star, 36-room boutique  resort overlooking the Nelson Bay marina and the blue waters of Port Stephens. The Nelson Resort offers a heated pool, tennis court, sauna and The Little Nel cafe where the egg and bacon rolls and the ploughman’s lunch platter compete with the Suspension Espresso coffee for the attention of guests, visitors and locals alike.

“We are over the moon at winning the North Coast Tourism award and scoring our first entry in the Good Food Guide,” said Mr Macdonald. “We’ve worked very hard to deliver a quality product and it’s so rewarding to see it all pay off. We hope locals from Port Stephens and Newcastle pop by to enjoy our smart little cafe which obviously impressed the Good Food Guide judges.”

Destination Port Stephens Marketing Manager, Tars Bylhouwer, said: “We congratulate the Nelson Resort on these two accolades which show that Port Stephens is offering quality, premium experiences for visitors seeking a stylish break by the seaside.”

To mark the twin accolades, the Nelson Resort is offering an adventure package including two nights’ deluxe accommodation, breakfast daily at the resort’s Little Nel Cafe, a dolphin cruise for two with Imagine Cruises, bike hire for two hours to explore the beach-lined foreshore and a choice of either a guided kayak eco tour for 90 minutes, one-hour on a stand-up paddleboard or sandboarding rides down the biggest sand dunes in Australia behind Stockton Beach.
