LIMA – As a result of its increasing promotional activities in the region, Peru continues to see year on year growth of visitor arrivals from Asia.  In search of more exotic destinations, Asian travellers are venturing further afield in pursuit of their once-in-a-lifetime holiday experience.

This year, PromPeru, a division of MINCETUR will once again exhibit at ITB Asia from 22 - 25 October, the travel trade show for the Asian market. This will be their third year in attendance, alongside its four co-exhibitors which includes Tucano, Dasatariq, Travel Group and Inca Rail.  Through their participation, they will be looking to engage with buyers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea as well as exploring opportunities in potential emerging markets such as India, Malaysia and Thailand.

Proceeding ITB Asia, PromPeru will also conduct a roadshow in Hong Kong and Taipei with eight Peruvian inbound tour operators in attendance from 28th to 30th October, 2013.

Following the growing interest received from both travel trade and media through its promotional activities in 2012, PromPeru has conducted a number of regional initiatives. This year, an emerging market trade familiarisation trip with travel agents participating from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore based agencies was arranged from 18th to 26th May, 2013 with a programme line-up of B2B events with some of the leading tourism suppliers in Peru.

From 18th to 26th July, 2013, PromPeru also conducted a media familiarisation trip from the same emerging markets.  The 11-day trip covered a wide range of activities, taking in the diverse topography of Peru, which included the coastal capital city of Lima, the historically significant Sacred Valley, Cusco, rich in Inca culture taking in the annual Fiesta de Paucartambo celebration, as well as the iconic Macchu Pichu, synonymous with Peru.  The group also had the opportunity to take in the Peruvian Amazon and its rich biodiversity as well as the mystical ancient drawings in the arid dessert of Paracas.

Visitor arrivals from Asia have grown in the past three years, especially from Japan, South Korea and China, strengthened by the burgeoning trade relations between Asia and Peru. In 2011, Peru received 99,517 visitors from Asia (20% grown compared with 2010); in 2012, the arrivals grew in 14% with 116 192 visitors.

In addition, Peru was chosen as winners for two awards at this year’s World Travel Awards, winning Best Culinary Destination at the World Travel Awards, for the second consecutive year, as well as PromPeru taking the title of Best Tourist Office in the Central and South America Edition for the third consecutive year.

World Travel Awards, regarded as the Oscars for the industry, celebrates excellence in travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Peru will host the World Travel Awards’ World Edition in November 2014.

The Peruvian Commission for the Promotion of Exports and Tourism (PromPeru) is the official entity created by the Ministry of Foreign Commerce and Tourism of Peru (MINCETUR). Promotional activities encompass activities such as attendance of trade fairs and road shows, one-on-one meetings, advertisement, arranging press trips, strategic alliances and international representation.  These activities are implemented in a total of 14 markets across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.
