Floods not affecting Bangkok for now

BANGKOK- Despite alarming news in media around the world, the flooding situation this October is far less critical than the massive flooding experienced two years ago. Currently, flooding affects 29 provinces (eight in the northeast, six in the north, eight in the central and seven in the east) with flood waters have receded in Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Kalasin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Mukdahan, Kamphaengphet, Phayao, Lampang and Mae Hong Son, according to the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Ministry of Interior, Thailand.

Most areas normally visited by tourists are not flooded at this time said TAT statement. Popular tourist destinations in the central region including Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Samet and Koh Chang have not been affected by the floods. Popular destinations in the south and north of Thailand, including Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Sukhothai also have not been affected by the floods.

In Chiang Mai, there was a report of flooding only in Fang District. The area is located far from the airport, and is not where tourists would normally go. All attractions of Bangkok where to tourists normally go are not flooded at this moment, and are operating normally.

Most areas along the Chao Phraya River have protection barriers. Therefore, the high-tide periods when the river forecasted to run at a higher-than-normal level as well as from October 16 to 22. Despite that the river’s level would probably reach two meter high, there is no reason to get worried, as the situation remains under control,  according to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Bangkok Flood Control Centre. Boat’s services on the Chao Praya River will be temporarily suspended until waters recede. One area around Bangkok Noi, upstream the Royal Grand Palace, was affected by some flooding yesterday with 400 homes being flooded.

Thailand’s main air gateway of  Suvarnabhumi International Airport and all airports throughout the country are operating normally. Don Mueang, Bangkok second airport, reinforced recently its flood walls and is well protected according to the Airports Authority of Thailand. Highways from the airports in Bangkok to tourist destinations such as Hua Hin, Pattaya, Rayong and Koh Chang are also operating normally.
