BANGKOK- Typhoon Haiyan who recently devastated the Philippines reached also Vietnam over the week-end. Despite its weakening activity, the typhoon brought heavy rains generating flooding in Central Vietnam. According to the Vietnam National Floods and Storms Control Agency, death casualties reached 36 up to Monday. About 80,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes. The agency indicated that 250,000 houses have been damaged.

Nine provinces from Central Vietnam were affected with Binh Dinh province (A province stretching from Qui Nhon to Pleiku) being the worst hit by floods. However, floods also were recorded in the old imperial capital of Hue as well as in the old city of Hoi An, a favourite destination among foreign travellers. Thousands of tourists had to be evacuated from both cities.

Waters were already receding on Sunday but the situation might remain difficult for visiting travellers to those destinations over the next days as the level of the decrease is still very slow. This is already the ninth major tropical storm that Vietnam was forced to confront this year.

The MTCO in a communication extended its support to all victims and also reaffirmed that the rest of Vietnam continues to remain open for travellers. The South of the country has not been affected by the flooding last week while Hanoi and Halong Bay only experienced moderate rainfall.
