Myanmar a rising star in tourism

Myanmar’s Ministry of Tourism says its master plan outlines a strategy to gain 1.5 million more jobs for citizens looking to make a career in tourism.
According to Ministry of Hotels and Tourism data, there were about 293,000 tourism-related jobs available in 2012.
But the new master plan, currently being drafted, could signal efforts to increase that to aroundy 1.5 million over the next 10 years.
Myanmar’s tourism is expected to grow fast and if it can maintain political stability it will challenge Thailand, which is being dragged down by constant political bickering, protests and violence.
Myanmar’s tourism ministry director, Hlaing Oo, commenting on job creation said: “The new plan covers the entire nation. We will develop jobs opportunities in tourism at all destinations.”
The Master Plan has 38 project of whiche Human Resources Project is already moving ahead.
The seven year project is being sponsored by the Asia Development Bank and the Norway Government at a cost of US$500 million. At present US$215.6 million has been spent on the plan.
Among the six strategic plans are:
• Upgrade Myanmar into a popular tourist destination;
• Promote basic infrastructure for the foreign travellers;
• Increase the number of destinations for tourists;
• Improve management and development in human resources;
• Strengthen social organisations.
It focuses on Yangon, Mandalay, Inlay, Kyaikthiyoe, Ngapali Beach, Chang Thar beach, and Nge Saung Beach, Puta O, Myeik archipelago, Naga region, Natmauk taung and Loikkaw.
