SUKHOTHAI – Sukhothai is well known as one of Thailand’s most historical destinations. The city is home to some of the Kingdom’s most exquisite temples, a beautiful testimony of a time which lasted from 1238 until 1438 when the capital moved to Ayutthaya. Sukhothai is known today for its spectac ular celebration of Loi Krathong in November, where floating candles illuminate the ponds and temples of the old city.

Sukhothai might now be well known by foreign visitors as a new centre for Songkran celebrations, the equivalent of the New Year in Thailand and its Buddhist neighbours. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is organising the Songkran Festival 2014 in seven major destinations across Sukhothai province. According to TAT, Songkran celebration originally came from the old capital as it occurred for the first time there, some 700 years ago.

To help everyone understand the ancient traditions of the Songkran Festival, TAT has organised special booths to be opened during the water festival where tourists can pour water onto Buddha statues in a traditional style.

Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of TAT explained that “All tourists, Thai and foreigners, are encouraged to share their fun times by signing into facebook for interactive activities and to upload their Songkran photos. This can be done by visiting facebook and the best pictures will get special rewards from TAT.”
