86 events name Adelaide as their host city

A healthy working relationship between the Adelaide Convention Bureau and its Team Adelaide partners has seen the destination yielding some impressive Business Tourism results this financial year to end March.

During the nine month period, some 86 events to be held in the coming years have named Adelaide as their host city.

The economic benefit from these events will be over $80m with almost 800 jobs to be created.

Current business tourism levels have also been healthy with some 157 events from bids won previously contributing more than $121m to the state economy and more than 1,100 jobs being created.

Of note among these 86 business events headed for Adelaide are;

· Royal Australasian Colleges of Surgeons ASC in 2017
2,000 delegates, 12,516 bed nights, and a $9,853,132 economic benefit to South Australia

· 10th Asia Pacific Conference on Clinical Nutrition 2017
700 delegates, 3,228 bed nights, and a $2,374,559 economic benefit to South Australia

· Australian Library Industry Association Conference 2016
800 delegates, 3,640 bed nights, and a $2,839,200 economic benefit to South Australia

· Pharmacy Australia National Conference 2015
600 delegates, 2,732 bed nights, and a $2,130,960 economic benefit to South Australia

· Conference of Major Superannuation Funds 2016
1,000 delegates, 3,414 bed nights, $2,662,920 economic benefit to South Australia

· Australian Palliative Care Conference 2017
800 delegates, 2,730 bed nights, and a $2,129,400 economic benefit to South Australia

· Two wine industry conferences to be held in 2016 and 2019
3,000 delegates – a combined 15,058 bed nights and a $12,400,000 economic benefit to South Australia

· An international Health Conference in 2016
700 delegates – 2,589 bed nights and a $2,019,420 economic benefit to South Australia

· A national Engineering Conference in 2015
800 delegates - 2,868 bed nights and a $2,400,000 economic benefit to South Australia

· A national Education Conference to be held in 2017
800 delegates – 2,730 bed nights and a $2,129,400 economic benefit to South Australia

In further good news, and in addition to the bids won already, a further 48 events worth up to $83 million are sitting in the pipeline with results of the bids submitted by the Bureau to be announced in the coming months.

“Undoubtedly the new offerings we have available in the likes of the Adelaide Oval and the Convention Centre developments have aided our success. Adelaide is certainly attracting its fair share of attention right now with key economic industry sector conventions. Our strategic partnership with Team Adelaide partners at this time is vital and one we look forward to continuing to strengthen as the remaining development projects come to fruition” said Adelaide Convention Bureau CEO Damien Kitto.

State Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell MP said “our Government recognises the importance of business tourism and we have committed to an unprecedented amount of infrastructure being built throughout the city including the ongoing Riverbank project which provides great opportunities to this lucrative tourism sector."

"Tourism is worth $5 billion to the South Australian economy each year and we want to increase this to $8 billion by 2020."

One of the key areas of interest for the Adelaide Convention Bureau and South Australia moving forward is the health and medical sector. The state’s facilities within this genre will be nothing short of leading-edge and world class in coming years.

“Our relationship with the team at the SA Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) has already proven successful in attracting a number of medical and health related events to the state. With further developments coming to fruition we welcome an even greater number of events within the medical sector” said Mr Kitto.

Adelaide Infrastructure Background

In addition to the Convention Centre’s $350m upgrade with Stage 1 completion due in late 2014, the Adelaide Oval’s $535m upgrade is complete, the $200m+ SAHMRI has opened, the $24m Victoria Square development and Rundle Mall – the city’s premier shopping precinct redevelopment will be completed in 2014.

Three new hotels, the Quest King William South, The Mayfair and Ibis Adelaide will open in 2014, and the $300m casino development will soon be underway – which also includes plans for a luxury hotel.

Sitting alongside the SAHMRI will be the new $1.5+bn Royal Adelaide Hospital and by 2016, we will also see the new Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Adelaide University’s Clinical Health building and the University of South Australia’s Centre for Cancer biology. This creates one of the largest medical health and research precincts in the southern hemisphere.
