VNAT calls for better security

Vietnam National Administration of Tourism has instructed all travel and hospitality companies to ensure the safety of tourists, especially Chinese nationals following ongoing tension over an oil rig in a disputed area of the East Sea.
VNAT said in a communication to travel industry companies that all parties must act to prevent discrimination against Chinese visitors and ensure cooperation with Chinese trade partners.
VNAT hopes to defuse a sensitive issue that has already prompted protests and resulted in China evacuating hundreds of tourists over the weekend.
VNAT head, Nguyen Van Tuan, was quoted as saying that the reactions of some tourist service providers and Vietnamese travellers who cancelled their tours to China was understandable.
China deployed an oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 (HD 981) in an area of the East Vietnam Sea that resulted in protests that focused on Chinese visitors.
Sentiments are running high and there is plenty of evidence to show Vietnamese tourists are cancelling airline bookings to China. A number of restaurants and hotels have refused to serve Chinese visitors.
