Thailand’s ruling National Council for Peace and Order announced, late Friday, that it has lifted the curfew in Bangkok and remaining provinces, claiming security was back to normal.
Coincidentally it comes on the eve of the World Cup and could be interpreted as gesture to increase Thailand “Gross National Happiness” factor that was at a low level during six months of protests and a subsequent curfew.
Football is popular in Thailand and millions of Thais and tourists will be looking forward to watching games at their favourite entertainment spots throughout the night.
NCPO’s head, General Prayuth Chan-ocha made the announcement, late Friday, during his TV talk to the Thai people tagged “Return Happiness to the Thai People”.
Earlier in the day Thai PBS a leading TV news channel claimed Lt-Gen Thirachai Narkvanich, commander of the First Army Region, had submitted to the NCPO chief a situation assessment report that was used to determine whether curfew should be completely lifted.
A military sources quoted by Thai PBS pointed out that lifting of the curfew would coincide with the beginning of a month-long World Cup soccer extravaganza in Brazil would further raise the happiness factor for Thai people.
On 11 June, the NCPO lifted the curfew in 17 provinces and 15 districts in three provinces.
That raised the total of curfew-free provinces to 22 in addition to seven districts in four other provinces. The latest announcement ends a curfew that was introduced 22 May.
