QUANG NINH, 23 June 2014: The People’s Committee of Halong City will dismantle a night market, as it is blocking the view of Halong Bay in northeast Quang Ninh province.
The committee chairman, Pham Hong Ha, told local media it will improve the view for visitors to the famous bay that is also a World Heritage site.
“The removal of the night market will be completed by 30 June…for a short while a temporary market has been set up for traders in a place where a local bus station was once located about 1 km from its present location.”
The province’s HCM Communist Youth Union secretary, Hoang Ba Nam, added that in the long term, the company will construct an underground night market near the site.
Halong Bay’s night market is a must-see attraction for travellers who shop for cheap casual clothing and handicrafts with images of Halong Bay.
It has been open since 1999 with up to 250 traders selling goods daily.
Halong Bay is the most popular sightseeing destination in the north and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and the world’s New 7 Wonders of Nature in April 2012 by New Open World Corporation, an associate of the New 7 Wonders Foundation.
