Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has proposed that the National Council for Peace and Order add a day to the public holiday that marks Her Majesty the Queen’s 82nd birthday, 12 August.
Extending the public holiday will give a welcome boost to domestic tourism in the country according to the ministry and Tourism Authority of Thailand officials.
According to a Thai PBS TV news report, the proposal was presented to Admiral Narong Pipattanasai, deputy chairman of the NCPO and also Navy commander-in-chief, who is overseeing the ministry.
TAT has proposed that 11 August be declared an extra public holiday to give a boost to domestic tourism.
Since HM the Queen’s birthday falls on a Tuesday, 12 August, including the Monday 11 August as an official holiday would give Thais a four-day holiday.
Past governments have added a gap day to some important national holidays to give workers a long weekend break and make it easier for them to return home to see their families. Usually the additional day was given during the annual Songkran Festival, mid-April.
