Travel spend in Vietnam

Vietnam National Administration of Tourism reports international tourists spend an average of USD102.3 per day in Vietnam.
The statistics were released, last Friday, as part of a survey on tourism trends conducted by VNAT with support from an EU-funded tourism development project.
The report’s findings were based on interviews with 1,543 international and local tourists at five tourism spots; Hue, Danang, Hoi An, and Sapa, during March and April, this year.
The survey estimated an average spend of USD102.3 a day for international travellers, while the domestic tourist spend was considerably less at USD65 a day.
Halong City, renowned for its iconic Halong Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh, recorded the highest spend at USD125.1 a day for international travellers and USD75 a day for local travellers.
Meanwhile, the central city of Hue recorded the lowest spend for international visitors at USD75.6 a day.
Domestic tourists spent only USD42.36 a day when visiting Hoi An a world heritage trading port in central Vietnam.
In 2011, the EU began funding the Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Programme (ESRT) under an agreement with the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The project was intended to “promote environmentally and socially responsible tourism services as part of Vietnam’s tourism sector strategy,” according to the ESRT website.
VNAT had advised the travel industry to focus more on high-end tourists in an effort to boost revenue as well as to expand and develop Vietnam’s tourism sector to appeal to high-spend tourists rather than budget travellers.
Priority markets are Russia, Japan, South Korea, western Europe, Australia and North America.
