SYDNEY Australia’s largest hotel group, Accor, has signed a management agreement for the new International Convention Centre Hotel in Sydney’s Darling Harbour.
The new hotel will operate under Accor’s luxury brand Sofitel.
Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour forms part of the NSW Government’s AUS2.5 billion transformation of Darling Harbour, which includes the creation of Sydney’s new international convention centre, exhibition and entertainment precinct.
“Australia has seen strong demand from offshore investors for five-star hotel assets. Financial institutions from leading economies such as Abu Dhabi, Korea and Singapore have been acquiring hotels in Sydney, driven by the huge potential in the Australian luxury market,” said Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer Simon McGrath.
Sofitel continues to expand in Asia Pacific with projects such as Sofitel So Singapore, Sofitel So Auckland and Sofitel Wellington.
Commenting on the signing of the ICC Hotel, McGrath added: “This new flagship hotel complements a strong network for the brand in this region and we look forward to welcoming Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour to our luxury portfolio.”
Announced on Tuesday by the NSW Government and property and infrastructure group Lend Lease, Australian hotel owner, Jerry Schwartz, has signed a conditional agreement to purchase the ICC Hotel, to be developed by Lend Lease.
Construction of the 35-storey, 600-room, Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is expected to start towards the end of this year and should be completion in the second quarter of 2017.
