BANGKOK Tourism Council of Thailand urges the government to establish a clear policy to drive the country’s tourism and rebuild tourist confidence.
TCT president, Piyaman Techapaibul, said the newly appointed government should set a clear long-term policy to revive tourism after slowdown caused by political instability since late last year.
“This is a good time to reform national tourism strategies as there is a new government led by Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha. The top priory should be identified with clear goals, especially long term strategies.”
She stressed: “The private sector needs to see a complete mission statement and action plan, not just short term fix-it measures, but long-term objectives.”
Past governments included tourism in their national agendas, but their goals were unclear, even in the short term, the president said.
Travel industry leaders have praised General Prayuth for taking decisive action to end scams and authorise a crackdown on illegal taxis at popular tourist destinations. Elected governments had neigther the clout or commitment to clean up the taxi-mafias.
“The government needs to ensure security and safety for visitors travelling in the country. That should be the short-term policy and priority.”
But she pointed out that the appointment of a government was a good move and that the new PM had made statements that suggested there was an action plan.
“For months, we can see that the National Council for Peace and Order led by Gen Prayuth solved many problems for the tourism industry. But the new PM needs to improve governance, boost investment and support the recovery of the tourism industry.”
The council also called for the new government to translate strategic plans proposed earlier into action. These include demolishing illegal hotels, building more infrastructure and improving accessibility, and enhancing local people’s skills.
