BANGKOK Kasikorn Research Centre estimates tourist arrivals from Russia will decline 5.5% to 1.65 million trips by year-end, which will seriously challenge Thailand’s tourism sector.
The centre said Russia is a priority market for Thailand, ranking third after China and Malaysia.
“With nearly 2 million visits a year and revenue of THB1 billion this is an important market for Thailand,” the report confirmed.
Arrivals have tapered off due to the political situation in Thailand and even though the situation has stabilised in the last four months, there are also economic issues in Russian that are slowing travel demand.
The centre estimated that the year will close with 1.65 million trips, down 5.5% from last year and generating THB1.16 billion in revenue, a decrease of 5.3%.
It recommended strong marketing action, a promotions through online channels and a campaign to increase information flow on Thailand’s attractions using online media.
“Online media will help distribute promotions to tourists faster. and will encourage more online bookings.”
The report recommended that the emphasis should be on the high-end travel markets.
Kasikorn Research Centre is a subsidiary company of Kasikorn Bank, which conducts tourism and business research mainly on Thailand’s economy including tourism with reliable recommendations and indicators on business prospects.
