Business tycoon heads Thai tourism

BANGKOK  Kobkarn Wattanavrangkuhas been named the country’s latest Minister of Tourism and Sports.
She is the chairperson of Toshiba Thailand, a joint venture her parents started in 1969 with Toshiba Corporation with the latter holdsing 45% of the equity.
Mrs Kobkarn is often described in the glossy pages of lifestyle and society magazines, such a Thailand Tatler, as an “Artist of Business”.

She held various management posts in the family’s joint venture, Toshiba Thailand Co Ltd, including advertising manager before moving up the ladder until she took over the role of chairperson.
Active in business, education, art and a member of Thailand’s elite hi-so, she has won awards and accolades for her contribution to art and community service.
She is married to Pol Maj Gen Chonnasith, who for a short term headed Phuket’s police force.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha’s cabinet list was officially announced 31 August after it was endorsed by His Majesty the King and published in the Royal Gazette.
Two appointments related to tourism:
Mrs Kobkarn Wattanawarangkoon, minister of tourism and sports and Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong, transport minister.
