CHIANG MAI Chiang Mai Skal Club’s monthly meeting will go offshore this month, travelling to Yangon, Myanmar, to seal a twining with Skal’s first club in Myanmar.
The actual twining ceremony will be held 19 September, but the Yangon club has organised three-days of hospitality and tours, 18 to 21 September, for Skal members from Chiang Mai.
Prior to 2011, clubs and associations were not allowed in Myanmar without considerable screening and conditions. by the military junta.
An economy category property, Wardan Hotel Yangon, quotes a special rate for three nights’ accommodation at USD240 for Chiang Mai Skal members attending the event.
For another USD110 the Yangon Club is arranging lunch and dinners on Friday and Saturday, as well as a lunch on the departure day, Sunday, at well-known local restaurants in the city.
A sightseeing tour will cost around USD90 per person.
Members will need to secure tourist visas. In its notes to members on the event, the club recommends they file visa applications at the country’s new online e-visa service, but warns it may not be applicable for all nationalities.
It will also take five days for the service to issue an email confirmation that the visa has been approved. The visa costs USD50.
Travellers need to show the email confirmation to airlines when booking tickets and to immigration officials at Yangon airport on arrival. The alternative is to travel to Bangkok and apply for a visa at the Embassy of Myanmar.
Visa-on-arrival is not available and visitors arriving in Yangon without a visa will be turned back, the Skal Club dispatch notes.
